Prague Vyšehrad Tour

Since the early Middle Ages the city of Prague has been situated between two fortified hills. The hill on the left bank of the Vltava river was named simply the Castle and the other, upstream of the Castle on a steep rocky cliff above the river, was called Vyšehrad. Since the 10th century Vyšehrad became the seat of the first dukes, later of Kings, of Bohemia.

In 1070 the Vyšehrad Chapter was founded and the wooden palace was converted to stone fortification which contained churches including a house independent of the Prague Bishop and subordinace only to the Pope. The restorer of Vyšehrad´s former glory was Charles IV, who had its defences rebuilt and a number of new buildings erected. The emperor deemed that coronations of the newly elected king should include a journey from Hradčany to Vyšehrad to assure that both power centres were recognized.

In the 15th century a small Hussite town grep up there. After the Battle of the White Mountain Vyšehrad became a military base with underground corridors and casemates. Notable features are, especially: the Romanesque Rotunda of St. Martin, the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, the Leopold Gate, the Tábor Gate, and the Vyšehrad cemetery. This burying-place was founded in the end of the 19th century to accomodate about six hundred illustrious men and women of the Czech nation such as A. Dvořák, B. Smetana, J. Kubelík, M. Aleš, A. Mucha, E. Destinnová, K. Čapek and others.
